OOSC Adopt-A-Spot Base Beautification Program

Plant some trees, sow some seeds, Adopt A Spot!

Join the OOSC to beautify our base with the Adopt-A-Spot program. Your squadron,
command or spouse group can help by cleaning up, planting and maintaining
landscaped areas around the base. How do you get involved? It's easy!

1.) Identify a location. The OOSC maintains a list of prime adoption areas including:
The main gate sign, around NMCRS, around the base theatre, around the command
areas, around Officers Club.  You may select a specific spot such as 'front of O'Club' or
'gazebo' etc to make the area more manageable.

2.) Develop a plan. Will you plant trees, bushes, flowers, or a mixture? Consider the
cost of materials, maintenance requirements, soil conditions, and water availability when
planning.  Or maybe you only have time to commit to keeping an area kept clean and
weeded.  You will be responsible for the upkeep of the spot, so plan accordingly
considering time and resources.  Also, do not add any stones or planter edging which

may make trimming more difficult.  **Self-Help on base will provide free mulch and tools
for check out to be used on base only, you haul the mulch. (Spring only)**

3.) Get to work! As an Adopt-A-Spot participant, you commit to plant and maintain your
adopted area for one year. Your spot can be marked with the placement of your own
squadron or command sign. Together we can create a more beautiful Oceana, show some
squadron/command spirit and you'll receive the satisfaction of a job well done.
**Please check with the officer in charge of your building or area before beginning work
to ensure that it will not affect their daily workings.

Did you know?

-          Base budgets have cut any beautification efforts for both Oceana and Dam
Neck bases.

-          The base pools almost didn't open this year due to budget cutbacks.

-          Our Officers and Sailors are being put to work painting parking lot lines and
other such needs around the base.

-         The only base clean-up that occurs is twice a year, and it's by our service members.
